Re-engerzing and Connecting Through Business Planning
During the 2009/10 fiscal year, Policy and Research Division in the Ministry of Social Development experienced a reduction in the number staff, acquired new responsibilities and at the same time faced increased expectations to deliver on government’s agenda for social programs and housing. Staff were feeling overloaded by the pace of change and volume of work. They needed the opportunity to connect with colleagues from across the division; to recharge and re-energize and to talk about the work they would like to focus on in the year ahead.
Facilitation Advice Strategic Communication
A one-day workshop was designed and delivered to all 65 division staff to create a prioritized list of projects to support the division’s strategic goals. The meeting provided opportunities for staff to learn about work in other areas, build the sense of team and group cohesion, and to provide critical input for the preparation of the annual business plan. Follow-up meetings were undertaken with the executive team to create a business plan that clearly reflected the work of everyone in the division. A business plan document, easy visuals, and a quarterly reporting template were produced to keep the plan alive for staff during the year.
Feedback on Sheila’s Services
Sheila leaves staff feeling that they ‘own’ the product and are proud of their achievement. She can both facilitate groups to achieve real outcomes and translate those outcomes into highly professional strategic documents. This combination of skills is a very value-added service that no other facilitator, in my experience, has been able to provide.

Supporting Work With First Nations
BC Hydro is evaluating the development of the Site C Clean Energy Project (Site C) – a proposed third dam and hydroelectric generating station on the Peace River in northeast B.C. This evaluation involves consultation with the public, communities, property owners and Aboriginal groups. This work requires a strong knowledge of aboriginal issues and legal frameworks within British Columbia and is highly specialized.
Sheila was engaged to support the Site C Team’s work with First Nations. She successfully worked with senior officials within the company and the provincial government, and, designed, managed and completed cross-jurisdictional research projects.
Feedback on Sheila’s Services
Sheila’s expertise and skill in strategic planning, research and facilitation are greatly valued by Site C’s First Nation Team. Sheila consistently delivers quality work in a timely fashion.
